Tell me all your news of love,
of triumphs over demons,
where you were crowned king over
all the levels of your being.
How did you survive through foreign
markets, shielding yourself from thieves
and those corrupted?
Tell me of the games you played that
entertained your smile in the darkest
part of night, or the loneliest
day's hour.

Brave birds...(2-25-2010)
Brave birds, flying in the snowstorm,
can you see where you are going?
Lilac bush, so bare without your leaves,
breaking in half from the weight of the snow;
did you cry when you fell or did you permit
your own demise?
Can I borrow your wisdom, or the shields
on your eyes; may I take your thoughts
as my own?

Empty the need for a companion...(2-24-2010)
don't let a poet die, or starve
in a time of famine.
If falling through a well of grief
remember all your vows of kindness.
Walk in clear paths and be gentle
when you can.
Hush now,
no more thoughts
until you can breathe
with only breath in mind.
in a time of famine.
If falling through a well of grief
remember all your vows of kindness.
Walk in clear paths and be gentle
when you can.
Hush now,
no more thoughts
until you can breathe
with only breath in mind.

Who am I to say you don't belong...(2-23-2010)
Close your eyes until meaning falls away.
Hold your breath no longer than the
speed of its exhale.
Allow yourself to become tired, so you
can sleep tonight.
Dream, until broken statues become
sacred again.
Hold your breath no longer than the
speed of its exhale.
Allow yourself to become tired, so you
can sleep tonight.
Dream, until broken statues become
sacred again.

Today is just a day...(2-22-2010)
Today is just a day to take away the patience
and fill the passion-producing machine with
frustration, hunger, and emptiness.
Is there any variable for chaos or change, to
transform honestly, results of peace?
Bring together the mind and heart, placing
boundaries on their speech, threatening
severe punishment on the one who
strays from good intentions.

You are of the willing..(2-18-2010)
Demons do not know peace,
demanding validation and expecting
to hear answers to questions like,
"Why me?"
They scream it isn't fair and expect your pity.
You bring them to the street, but the stomachs
of every man met have never known trust.
Don't shake the hand of grief unless you're
willing to embrace him the way his mother could.
With or without a teacher or companion, the
demons will roam the streets.
Never find yourself alone in the fight, but be
prepared to be the first to speak,
telling the world how you
are of the willing.

When they held this as their own. (2-14-2010)
She cherished me because she wanted to,
because it was in her to give.
She showered me in her heart.
She knew she would receive my love,
and she understood that she was worthy.
He cherished me because he wanted to,
because every cell and pore of his entire being was compelled,
confirming the sincerity.
He showered me in his heart,
yearning for my health as cherubs fell to the ground dying in ecstasy.
He could not be consumed in doubt or concern,
knowing he too was cherished.
They did this because the spirit was in them.
They responded to the heart's cry.
They accepted love and the commitment to service
of God, or the heart, or the unknown motivator
of such chaos.
Unknowing of the end they continued to stay open
to the spirit of this holy action.
They treated this all as the highest gift
and vowed to themselves never to see it as anything less.
This vow created their action to serve,
and when they held this as their own they were happy.

Don't tell our daughters...
Don't tell our daughters of the ocean or the sea.
Don't let them know any stories about ships docking in the bay.
Don't allow our sons to hear of boats 80 times the size of a man.
Don't let him hear the muffled bass of a blow horn.
If they hear of such tales they will forever be lost in wonder, dreaming of water.

Does the sun suffer like the earth?
Does the sun place its hand over its abdomen when it wakes in the morning, or does the sun ever sleep at all? Does it roll under covers letting cyclones enter its head, lifting and dropping its radiance? Is it the sun or the illusion of clouds which shields the earth. does the sun suffer like the earth?

I pretended to be mad in the morning. I cursed at the dull space. I put water in the kettle for tea.
I wished for better days than misery. I prayed for a miracle but expected the received silence.
Maybe tomorrow will be better, and it was until I realized it was here, and these feelings remained.
I reached for the critic, but she also wasn't in her office. I looked for hope, but with a pillow so firm it was an obstacle to fall asleep. Why doesn't her secretary take messages, "just have her call me. Have her coach me back into shape." I wondered why I depended on the romantic self-discipline. Wondering what compliment I might pay him if my tongue could cherish his actions rather than metaphors of the sun. I wondered what the sky looked like this morning, but I was too busy cursing in the tub.
Who can bare their reflection in this? Who can bare their own self-disappointment? Who knows how to be lost like this?

The Circle of I
Hiding in the circle of I,
Frightened to tell the truth
To parties outside a perimeter
Of an ellipse that sings uncertainty
And beyond it lies a compromise
Of having no control over thoughts
And feelings not produced by that “I”,
Single-celled unit of a heart,
Beating, pumping, caffeinated blood
That strangles the stomach
And deprives itself of all nutrients,
Feeding off of panic in racing
Thoughts of destroying love
Only to imagine scenes of your
Abandonment, irrationally denying that
you are of the body of trust,
denying that you could ever understand
denying that I can let go of the history
that tells me I am too much
to handle by anyone, but conflicted
by my enlightenment, conflicted by knowing
the difference, conflicted by the obvious
reasons that force me to hide in
this dreary, self-absorbed circle, of
that I-in denial, awaiting the
hour where I will lay in your bed, revealing to you
the meaning behind the desperate
subtle hints that say, “I’m scared
today,” telling you it was just the
surface of the truth, presenting
this to let go of that “I” and
reenter familiar arms after having
and experience so profound that
I came to terms with compromise.

Snowing
My hair wet; my skin red. The shower an unbalanced mechanism of heat and ice. Beads of water drip from my skin. I am barefoot walking through the house. You can smell the dog and feel her sheadings on the floor. My naked body, lightly dried with a soaking towel, covered by a sheet in a cocoon of heat and flesh. I am pulled into his arms. His scent fills me, his gentleness surrounds me. My hair damp dripping on my back. There is a chill in the air as I lie beneath the covers. Somehow I understand and know for certain that is is snowing. In the morning my hair stands high. The bed holds me in place. I never want to leave. Knowing I am fragile there was comfort in the security. It was snowing.

...Celebrated its joy. (7-31-08)
I have not swung so high in so long. This timeless feeling of childhood creeping into my soul. I am alive this day. The clouds excite me. I was asked to describe the color green for someone who is blind. I said that green is the sour in a granny smith apple, it is the bitter aroma of freshly cut grass. Later I thought it to be the sounds of water rinsing spinach in the kitchen sink. The sound of spring leaves, not fall leaves, soft and moist, brushing against each other in the breeze. I laughed in the day that this was. I cherished and celebrated its joy.

Seeing People.
I see people, I see people. I see family and I see friends. In my heart I wrap my arms around them and I hold them in hopes to heal all the things they were never given, to help them cope with the disappointment of things they cannot do for whatever reason. Keeping in mind this concept of suffering helps me remember why I should keep giving my love. "They need this, " I say. I should sacrifice some of my ego's desires to give to this need. I am not neglecting my needs as my ego does "still" receive attention. I am rewarded when people see this love that's inside of me and recognize this intention. The quiet get to see it when they listen. I try to silence myself so I can find who else holds this desire to love others. I don't want to be sad and I have trouble understanding why we don’t believe we can do better.
After the bombs...
I wrote this piece with the thought of what life would be like if the war increased to a larger scale and the governments of every country were destroyed. In this thought there would be no more economy as we know it, and the only focus would be for survival. There is no longer anyone to protect us and we would be alone. My thoughts were focused on how I would take care of myself.
What would I do after the bombs have dropped? Imagining what it would be like when such things have been taken from me. I realized this story would reveal who I am; a part of me I have in my mind; my largest ideals for peace. I saw an image on a screen of an airplane garage that was bombed. I imagined what it would be like to be in there alone, with the majority or the structure of the building still intact. I pictured the season to be winter; all the people I know are dead. I am alone. Snow is falling. I have survival skills. I'd have to eat meat again; I wouldn't have a choice. I would collect fabrics of the American flag that might have been shredded by enemies of America. Maybe there are people alive, but the population of America would have decreased drastically. I would turn to prayer because I would be alone, and as I prefer my devotion to be private. I would pray to the divine. I would dress statues in the fabrics I would find. This reveals my fanaticism.
Slowly I would make friends; survivors would find me. I would talk to them about peace and our conversations would be of love. Because we are survivors I would share the nothingness we have. We would hunt together. Some factories still exist but there is no central form of government our only focus is love and survival. I would spend more time in silence. There would be no more pressure to succeed because every day alive would be a success of its own and they would be celebrated.
I picture myself making art with things that I find; mostly things of function, but images of things I find pretty would please me. Sometimes I long for this intimacy where the world can become quiet and I can hear myself - no more pressures - just the sounds that I make will be my comfort. In this space of alone I create.

Antioxidantes (Fiction)
It was a regular day at Joe's Family Supermarket. The baker was five minutes early, as usual, Randy, the guy who delivers the milk truck, was waiting in the back to unload his delivery, nothing out of the ordinary. Rodger had unlocked the doors and the early morning crowd began their shopping.
"Hello Mrs. Carrington," Lisa said, How are you doing this morning," as she began packing her groceries.
"Oh fine thanks for asking."
She didn't have to ask. Lisa already had paper bags prepared in plastic. "What are you up to on this fine day?"
"Well I'll be baking a birthday Cake this afternoon."
"A birthday cake? Well, gosh! Who's birthday is it?"
"My Grandson. He'll be turning 13." Mrs. Carrington let out a little chuckle, "His mother had told him the exact time he was born when he was younger and ever since he doesn't consider it his birthday until the clock marks the minute."
"Wow! He's quite a mathematician."
"Oh yes! He has it practically down to the very second. For Christmas he asked for a world clock that runs off of those, ohh, what do you call them?...Those Satellite things. Yes, that's it, Just so he could be more accurate in his calculations."
"I guess we both know what he'll grow up to be." Neither one of them answered that question, but they left that awkward moment be. The two old birds laughed together till all the groceries were packed. Then Mrs. Carrington was off and Lisa prepared for her day.
The day was going smoothly, nothing was out of the ordinary. The store had been remodeled five years ago and it hasn't been until the recent year that everyone had calmed down about the aisles being rearranged. The community was finally able to navigate themselves around the building, finding their groceries with little to no assistance, but there always was a confused customer here and there.
It was just about 11:30 when the general manager was to go on his lunch break. At this time the rest of the staff is to work diligently for the following hour as they're expected to step up in the manager's absence. Normally the staff is able to manage the store and have rarely faced problems they couldn't handle. Being a weekday there wasn't much difficulty to be expected.
A few moments after the general manager took his break, an eerie feeling began to creep in Joe's supermarket. The old woman who works in the seafood department got a chill. She's known to have psychic visions and has predicted other staff member's, and a few special customers’, fortunes. She's also known to be seen every now and then behind the building talking to cats rummaging in the dumpster. One of the cashiers who can barely speak English told us he heard her discussing a tax rebate for her alien friend. We don’t' know who to believe, but the following week we did see an article in the tabloid magazine's about Alien's paying their taxes for their residence in the Milky-Way. Regardless, when the fish lady gets chills it means trouble.
Not long after, gray clouds blocked the sun's light. The store grew dark. Suddenly a spark flashed by the entry door and smoke filled the air. As it lifted, draped in a black cape stood Zee-Abara, arch enemy and leading competition to Joe's Family supermarket.
"Ha, Ha, Haaaa! I am here to destroy you all!"
Women were screaming, babies were crying, pandemonium to say the least. The cart boy was running down the aisles screaming for his life, "The end is near. Oh God. What are we going to do?"
Zee-Abara created a whip out of a pack of Family-Sized Twislers and had already captured 3 section managers before we knew it; one from the deli, bakery, and hot foods. Groups began to form in the different sections of the store.
In the produce section they thought about tying him up with cornhusks, but there wasn't enough to make a strong enough rope since the sale that ended the previous day had cleaned Joes' out of their corn stock.
In the canned foods they thought of tripping him by rolling store-brand caned fruit, but the store-brand cans were all dented, and the vegan in their group didn't want to sacrifice the higher quality fruit. Dam Vegans.
People in the baking goods aisle thought about throwing packages of flour at him, but someone said that it was a stupid idea and they lost interest quickly.
People in the bread aisle were lost, as they thought bread's more enjoyable than it is painful. They weren't thinking since they could have suffocated him with the bags, but regardless.
People were being taken over by the half dozens. Zee-Abara didn't like dozens because of a bad experience with a baker and an egg truck, but still there was only so much that a family-sized pack of Twislers can do.
All hope was lost. The time had come where Joe's Family Supermarket would come to an end in the world of business. Zee-Abara had already tricked the policemen into collaborating the police with an endless supply of doughnuts. Joe would be forced to sign over his company in order to save the lives of his customers and trusty staff.
But behold! It is Mikey-Man. He has come to save the day. "Freeze Zee-Abara, for I hold in my hands Hershey's genuine chocolate syrup and I know how to use it."
"Ha, Ha, Haaa! You're a fool! Your Hershey's genuine chocolate syrup can not harm me!"
"Oh but you didn't know. This is DARK CHOCOLATE!"
"Gasp! How did you know? My one weakness is in the antioxidants of dark chocolate that the food and drug administration recently announced. Blast! If they had never made that stupid announcement I would be invincible."
"Save it for Sunbury you bread-head. You're going down and you know it!"
"We'll see about that."
With a twist of the wrist and excellent bagging skills, Mikey-Man dodged the liquorish whip and shot the dark chocolate syrup over the evil villain. Zee-Abara became paralyzed and landed straight into the Goya section where bottles of Tabasco broke open and finished the job. Zee-Abara was finished. Mikey-Man had won. And that's the end of that chapter.

Letters to God
I was cleaning my room and found a little notebook that I had used to write some letters to God. It was at a time where I was experiencing little attention from the family, going through puberty, and realizing how I different I was compared to everyone else. There was so much I didn't understand at this time, but was at the very least able to see I needed help. I knew there was something better than what I was experiencing. These letters were my cry of the time. Things have changed greatly, but I think that the letters can explain things about me, revealing sides of myself I didn't know existed until now:
5/7/01
Dear God,
I decided to keep a journal because I find myself becoming mentally insane. I prayed for your strength to help me. I ask for your help. I think I need to see a psychologist. I’ve thought about it before but today I’m sure. I can’t stand this family. I try so hard to keep straight and not loose hope in them, but it just doesn’t work. If one day I do see a shrink I would show you to them. I need their help.
It all started with my neighbor Alex. He had a report for school due today which he laid off till the last minute. I helped him get a really good start. I did as much as I could for him as possible. He had a sub today so he had extra time to work on it. I couldn’t come up to help him but I told him to just do it and later I’d type it for him.
Well, he didn’t do it at all and at 9:15 he calls me and asks for my help. It was just too late, and it was his fault, so I turned him down. He hung up on me. My sister gets mad because I wouldn’t help him and that’s what she tells my parents not letting me explain. So when I finally get the chance they won’t listen.
My dad told me to shut up. I left him for that. My mom is mad because I won’t help him when Alex’s dad is sponsoring Marlo in like $300 for baseball and I won’t help him. I told her I don’t have the time at 9:00 and I gave him all afternoon and then I get told to shut up?
So then my dad comes in yelling at me for talking back, grabbing my neck and pushing me, and telling me to go to my room. My mom called him up and did the rest with him till 10:15 at night. I just went insane. When my dad hit me I didn’t get mad and immediately forgave him praying for your strength God. Help me get through this abuse. Get me the help I need. Help me get through this. Give me your strength. Amen.
On Thursday the 3rd we had off from school and after I took my shower I looked in your eyes and cried. I was so confused. I prayed for your strength. I did a tarot reading and it told me I work too hard on myself and I try to thing things through and become too confused. It said to just let go and trust in the universe. The next day as hard as it was I let go wand was free. I was very happy and self-satisfied. I don’t know what happened. It led me back to here.
5/8/01
Dear God,
I just tried to explain to my mom what happened yesterday with Alex and show her how I was going nuts. She listened but she felt as if I didn’t do things right and I was overreacting, and I would of done things differently. If I would of done things differently he would of gotten a lower grade than his 50%. I just couldn’t help him. For the crap I handled yesterday and the stuff he pulled off wasn’t right. He doesn’t want help he wants me to come and look up the answers so he won’t have to do it. Now he wants my help to do his corrections and his homework. I wasn’t sure about going to a psychologist today, I was nervous. As I talk more to my family I realize more and more why I should go. I’m scared that I won’t get what I want from it. I don’t want family counseling I just want out. I also typed my paper this morning for English because everyone was using the computer last night. I know they needed it and when I had the chance yesterday to use the computer I was writing the report. So when I’m typing it I get yelled at for doing my homework in the morning. I could of done it in study hall and it wouldn’t of made a difference. Okay so at supper- the conversation came up and my dad asked why I couldn’t help him. I explained it to him saying it was too late and then I got yelled at for it. He said, “By who?” I told him, “You and Mom.” He said, “I didn’t yell at you for helping him I yelled at you for refusing to…” then he realized what I said was right and he said, “I yelled at you fro talking back.” I only talked back in the first place because I did most of his work and when I tried to explain it before I got told to shut up. I told my mom I don’t appreciate being told that after I did all that work.
Then my mom and I got talking about what would help Alex get straight. I told her there isn’t much we could do because his parents are never home and they are busy they can’t help him, and what he needs is counseling or therapy. My sister buts in, “Who?” I’m like, ‘we are talking here mind your own conversation.’ She then asked again, “Who?” I told her we’re talking. My dad is like, “don’t but in,” to Marlo. Then he asks what I said. “Nothing,” then mom tells him, “Psychologists.” Dad asks, “For who?” I said, “Not a shrink a consoler.” He just butted in after he told my sister not to. My mom didn’t tell him for whom though. My sister asked why I was so grumpy. I said, “What does it matter to you?” She said, “I’m not even going to talk anymore.” Dad repeated, “Me too.” Then mom joined in, “Me either.” They all act like little snobs. I felt like screaming ‘Shut Up!” They act so stupid. They’re so noisy and they don’t’ even care at all. I think I’ll see that psychologist tomorrow.
Later Alex came over and did more of his failing report. He got my mom to do some by acting stupid. I don’t think he is going to make it far in his life at all.

Dear God,
I decided to keep a journal because I find myself becoming mentally insane.

Swing-System
When I was very young we use to live in a different house. My parents had rented a home in the mountains. We had a large back yard, a dog, and the house had a second floor. At that time we would hold parties that the whole family would attend. It was when we were the closest, and possibly the furthest apart.
My sister was celebrating a birthday, probably her third, and it was a hot summer day. She was given a swing set that my father decided to hang in the archway between the kitchen and the living room. There was a toy in my hand, some sort of contraption that had a yellow, plastic punching fist/glove attached to a yellow structure. There was a trigger that when pulled, the fist would spring out and the one using it would be able to jab another as much as a plastic punching fist could handle.
I was placed in the yellow fisher-price swing with the blue handle-guard as my sister had volunteered to show me how this device worked. I don't think she had mastered the art of letting go, nor the art of understanding the swing, as her way of demonstrating her knowledge was physically pushing and pulling me without releasing the rope, but moving me none the less.
Once she had gotten board of explaining the swing, she had abandoned me for our fisher-price kitchen set where her and cosine Patrick had take the liberty of cooking everyone a delightful plastic meal.
My God-mother Anne had replaced Marlo’s profession of ‘swing-pusher’. My gram Bucko was seated near me, holding the punching-contraption. As I would swing forward Grammy would pull the trigger and the punching glove would extend to meet my tummy. As I'd reach the climax of the swing I would tense my arms to my chest knowing she was going to get me. As the toy touched me she would let out a "Boop," sound.
Excitement ran through me and I would cry out the most tickled giggle that one could imagine possible. Every swing became an enjoyment; every ebb and flow was bliss. Swinging forward, 'Here it comes,' "Boop!" Laughter fills the room. Swinging backwards, 'here we go again. Getting closer. Oh God!' "Boop!" Laughter all over again. This simple pleasure is most enjoyable, but more so of it's little need for complex entertainment.
The wisdom I find in this swing-system gives me hope for darker times. If we focus merely on the moment that’s most enjoyable, daily life can become pure happiness. The initial swing we're in the moment, getting closer and closer until we reach climax. When we’re there we love every bit that we can consume. Then the back swing is our opportunity to realize we're only getting moment-by-moment, closer to the time we return to that forward swing. Ebb-getting ready for it; Flow-Enjoying every minute.

Sentimental Box (Fiction)
It wasn't till years later that Becka realized she would keep her job at the law firm. She had plans to go away to school, but that was 15 years ago, and she had already started a different life. It didn't sadden her though.
Sure, she had faced a few rough years with her dad dieing, and almost leaving her husband, but her grief had passed and her marriage has been strengthened.
This was her daughter's sixth Fourth of July celebration, her son's ninth, and they were spending it this year at her sister's place. Since her husband's job location has been switched every couple of years, holidays were usually held in different locations. After setting up the picnic table she began to retrieve the decorations. Judy, her sister, was gabbing away about the recent news as both of their children ran through the yard. The wind was blowing a calm gust and laughter surrounded the children.
Becka watched silently, leading Judy under the impression that she was absorbing every word said. She interrupted her, "You know Judy, I just realized, our kids. They don't have the same childhood that we had." The way that the kids were playing under the Maple trees made her see they were making an attachment to the place they were at. For her children this place would become a memory in the sentimental box in their heads, and as they'd grow older, now would be their childhood. This is how they would spend it, and it would never be the same as her experience. 'When did I become my mother,' she thought to herself. She now knew why adults would cry at the strangest moments.

Recent Observation
My mother wanted to tell my father the news about what recently happened to her. My dad was listening, but moved himself from her instant path of sight to get a cup of coffee. She was getting ready for church in the bathroom and was talking with the door open. Because she could no longer see him she instantly panicked, “Wait! Why are you walking away? I’m trying to tell you something.” The tone of her voice practically shed tears that yelled, ‘Give me attention! Why doesn’t anyone listen to me? Don’t they care?’
Annoyed, my father yelled, “I’m listening! Can’t I get a cup of coffee?” Was he supposed to stand there like a British guard? Should he have stopped her in her speech to announce his plans-respecting his intent but interrupting her speech? Should he have let her speak on without saying anything just as he did? Should she have been able to recognize that he would not have been interested in her news? Should she have been able to see he has his own intentions, that maybe her story’s only important to her? If she had thought about her conversation coming out of her own mouth would she be as interested in it as she is now? Should she have been able to see that he does care yet that standing there wont prove or disprove his interest? Should he be able to see that she didn’t understand he was listening? Should he be able to see that she just needed attention or some validation? Is she supposed to understand that he didn’t know what she needed? Is he supposed to understand that she didn’t know what ‘he’ needed?
No body told each other these things. They did what they felt. They responded to the situation just as they would have meant to do, without any other influence. It was just an observation that I made. That’s all.
